GIMSports: Gymnastics & Fitness

GIMSports offers this specially designed, developmentally appropriate gym and fitness programme for young children with Down syndrome. They have a team of experienced, professional fitness instructors who have, on average, 20 years of experience, and have worked with persons with Down syndrome since 2012.

In addition to developing their gymnastic skills on various pieces of apparatus, the programme also seeks to improve their strength, flexibility, coordination and cardiovascular fitness levels. The programme adapts age old training principles to form a fun, addictive, safe, stress-busting workout!

Swimming

Swimming lessons are conducted by the experienced coaches of SpeediSwim Acquatic Centre. Participants learn the fundamental aspects of swimming, develop confidence, and learn to stay safe in the water as well as breathing techniques, floating, kicking, various swimming strokes, and eventually techniques to improve endurance and stamina.

Swimming involves a full body workout which improves cardiovascular conditioning, strengthening of muscles, endurance, posture and flexibility.

Yoga

The Yoga sessions are facilitated by Ms. Adrienne Low, who is a practitioner of Yoga Therapy. The programme comprises a special selection of Yoga exercises suitable for persons with Down syndrome, that help to stimulate physical coordination, mental clarity, and social development as well as increase body awareness, strength and flexibility. Specialised breathing exercises and relaxation techniques help to improve focus and concentration and reduce hyperactivity and anxiety.

Bowling

Down Syndrome Association (Singapore)_Sports_Bowling 1

Bowling is a popular sport amongst our members. Our skilled coaches, Mr. Tan Kim Joo, Mr. Daniel Chang, who conduct our classes at the Singapore Recreation Club, and Mr Richard Tan Sok Pin who conducts our classes at the Civil Service Club, Tessensohn Road, work on techniques of bowling and prepare participants for competitive events. Bowling contributes to balance, coordination, and motor skills; promotes good muscle tone; and as a team event, improves interpersonal social skills. Our members have participated at various tournaments such as the Special Olympics National Games Singapore (2013), hauling a total of 13 medals, including 3 gold medals.
