Geonbae is the supplier of the largest variety of Korean wines in Singapore. They supply to many local Korean restaurants and supermarkets, and have a large following of customers on their online site. We are delighted to be able to offer their products on our platform, and here is an exclusive interview with Geonbae’s founder, Sophie Sea. Hope you find her journey to the world of Korean wines as fascinating as it was to us!
Q: Can you tell us a little bit about yourself, and how Geonbae started.
Hi, I’m Sophie and I’m passionate about Korean wine, especially makgeolli (Korea rice wine).
I first tried makgeolli in a Korean restaurant in 2010 and I fell in love with it. It was light, sweet and refreshing. It was yummy 🙂
I was never a fan of alcoholic drinks as the taste was too strong/bitter for me. But makgeolli changed my perception about alcoholic drinks. In addition, makgeolli is a healthy drink, which is rich in lactobacillus bacteria to aid digestion. How wonderful if I can enjoy makgeolli with my family and friends? It’s a perfect match for any gatherings, no more troubling over what to buy for the next celebration or festive occasion too!
In 2010, there was little awareness and variety of Korean wines in Singapore. Hence, I thought it’ll be great if I can bring in more variety and share the joy of makgeolli drinking in Singapore. That’s how Geonbae got started.
Q: How would you describe your brand & your products?
Geonbae in the Korean language (건배) means Cheers! As the name suggests, we would like to spread our love for Korean wine and celebration. Cheers (Geonbae!) to values that are important to us – Family, Friendship, Love and Health.
Q: What is unique about your business that differentiates you from this very competitive industry?
We are specialised in unique Korean drinks that are rich in culture and great to taste. At Geonbae, you can find the largest variety of Korean wine in Singapore. We value our customers’ feedback. We love that they enjoy Korean wine like we do. Sometimes, we have customers’ requests for certain Korean wine and we’ll explore the possibility of bringing them to Singapore. In fact, there are a few products listed on Geonbae that have been brought in thanks to our customers’ initiative!
Q: What is your ultimate goal or dream for Geonbae?
Our Geonbae dream/goal is to have people all over the world enjoy makgeolli to the extent of how people are drinking beer now.
Q: Euforia Singapore is a social enterprise with a mission to help Non-Profit Organisations and their members. Is Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) part of your plans for your brand?
Geonbae is still a relatively young company and we are not active in this area yet. But CSR is definitely an area we want to look into as we grow. I’m glad that Euforia is offering this platform where we as a SME can contribute to the society as well.
Q: Can you share any of your personal volunteer or CSR-related experiences with our readers?
I have been volunteering at the True Hearts Connection mentoring program for the past 10 years. A group of volunteers and I work with Haven Home under Salvation Army to act as a mentor/guide to the children with neglective/abusive family conditions. In any CSR activity or perhaps many aspects in our life, we need to act with our heart. Not just based on pure empathy or feelings, but based on commitment. You need to commit the time and effort to make things happen and improve lives.
